What does “Holistic Living” mean to us?

The concept of holistic living is not a new one, yet many people are still unclear about its meaning. Often misused as ‘holistic healing’, a holistic lifestyle goes beyond the approach of just healing the body, mind and spirit naturally.

Holistic healing consists of all the modalities of healing, and include such techniques as therapeutic massage, acupuncture, herbal medicines, and a myriad of other healing methods. Most of these are ancient practices originating in the Eastern world and proven to have tremendous benefits when used alone or with modern medicine.

Holistic living takes it a step beyond healing the body, mind and spirit. When approaching life with a holistic view, a person continues to live holistically even after the healing has taken place. Furthermore, the healing is reflected out into the world to include healing others and the planet.

Another term that is often used interchangeably is ‘conscious living’. It is usually defined as making conscious choices for a healthier environment. This too, is only one aspect of true conscious living. This conscious effort is equally important for the choices we make in how we treat ourselves, fellow human beings, and all living creatures within the larger environment.

Holistic living consists then of bringing harmony and balance to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of all living things, beyond the self.

This approach to life is also as ancient as the healing practices mentioned earlier, but not a common practice in our hurried, modern society. Unfortunately, the current state of the world is a consequence of this divergence from holism. A return to it is needed for spiritual and planetary healing to happen.

Living in harmony with nature is what Mother Nature always intended. Living peacefully with others is what the Universe has always wanted for us too. It’s never too late to start. One small conscious effort at a time is all you need to begin the journey of inner and outer change.

Holistic lifestyle tips

Holistic living is based on the belief that true happiness, success, health, balance and peace come through an alignment of the mind, body and spirit. I know that all of you are thinking, “It sounds wonderful and I would love to get some of those good vibes going in my life, but how do I start?”

That’s a GREAT question!

There are a myriad of ways to achieve holistic health, primarily because each person’s path is different. We are all “bio-individual” which fundamentally means that there’s no one-size-fits-all method — each person on the planet is a unique individual with highly individualized needs and requirements. I would like to share with you 15 simple ways to begin adding a more holistic approach to your life. See which suggestions resonate with you and start implementing, sista!

Here are my favorite 15 lifestyle suggestions designed to help you live a more holistic life:

  1. Take time and treat yourself to some “quiet time” every day. You can read, connect with the divine or meditate. It will nourish your body, soul and relieve a lot of stress.
  2. Buy and wear natural fiber clothing whenever possible. Wear only 100 percent cotton for your undergarments. Cotton allows your skin to breathe.
  3. Get some houseplants. Plants in your home and office freshen and enrich the oxygen content of the air that you breathe.
  4. Keep TV watching to a minimum. It’s not called a “boob tube” for nothing! And make sure what you choose to watch is uplifting and not toxic or upsetting.
  5. Avoid using microwave ovens to cook food.
  6. Say grace before each meal. Gratitude is the way to happiness.
  7. Laugh every day. Laughter is the best medicine.
  8. Give generously of yourself, your resources and your unique gifts to others.
  9. Get a massage. If money is an issue, check out massage schools — the students offer massages to the public for a fraction of the cost!
  10. Make a practice of giving one compliment to a person each and every day — a loved one, a co-worker or a stranger.
  11. Eat more raw foods.
  12. Shop at your local farmers market.
  13. Drink more water.
  14. Do something for other people. Helping others is a healing act for both you and them. A little volunteer work is a great way to keep a healthy perspective on yourself and life.
  15. Say “I love you” every day to the people you love and cherish.

The Benefits of Living Holistically

The concept of holistic living embraces a lifestyle that focuses on the mind, body and spirit as a whole to elevate oneself to a greater state of being. More commonly, we hear the term “holistic healing”, which originated in Ancient Asian civilizations about five thousand years ago and uses Traditional Chinese Medicine practices to heal the mind, body and spirit. These practices are based upon natural therapies for the relief of pain and illness, such as Oriental medicine and nutrition, acupuncture treatment, massage therapy and various forms of Asian bodywork.

The purpose of holistic healing is to restore a balance of energy, or qi, while taking into consideration the mental, physical and emotional factors. But, what about after your pain is gone? A holistic approach to living should be a constant effort even in the absence of illness. The physical aspect, the body, needs regular exercise, a balanced diet of proper nutrition and sufficient rest while the emotional aspect, the mind, requires respect for oneself and positivity in its thoughts. The spiritual being must consist of an inner calmness and openness that allows creativity and trust. When the mind, body and spirit are in a balanced harmony, every aspect of one’s life is believed to improve.

How does one live holistically? Like all good things, it takes time, consistency, and awareness. Start with small choices, such as what you will have for breakfast. Rather than choosing a processed fast-food meal, choose a more nutritious platter of fruit, whole grains, and protein. Most importantly, be more conscious of your mind, body and spirit. In addition to watching the quality of food you put into your body, consider the quality of thoughts that are entering your mind and the emotional reactions you have to events. Positivity and the ability to manage your emotions is part of achieving a healthy, holistic lifestyle.
